Selections from the Psychic's Museum (2006-2016) compiles a decade's-worth of subterranean pop gems from the career of Chattanooga TN's ultra-cool Mythical Motors.
Mythical Motors worship at the altar of lo-fi pop deities Guided by Voices, The Cleaners from Venus, and Bevis Frond while also taking influence from college rock touchstones like The Clean, Let's Active, R.E.M., Wire, and the expansive Elephant 6 Collective. For ten years, the band has distilled jangle pop, post-punk, southern power pop, and psychedelic folk into tape-haze-transcending earworms that will remain in your brain far longer than their run-times will have you believe, while also weaving a wide net of surrealistic narratives that tackle subjects ranging from historical battlegrounds to interstellar travel, mythical creatures, and dream paralysis.
Out on May 27th as a limited edition cassette, "Selections" was culled together by Fall Break Records as a way to give Mythical Motors fans old and new a way to dissect the band’s history in one extensive group of previously self-released and unreleased tunes.
"It’s not a typical thing for us to premiere an entire album stream on our website, but when it’s full of quality like this Mythical Motors album, we’re down for whatever...With so many songs for you to dive into, it may seem overwhelming at first for those unacquainted with the band. I say to you, patience my friends, I’m sure everyone can find something to enjoy and take with them. After a few spins, “Full Breathing Costume”, is a favorite of mine."- Austin Town Hall
"The album features an impressive 22 songs that encapsulate ten years of Mythical Motors evolution. The songs are short and punchy, the lyrics are intelligent, the guitar work is a flawless mix of clean and dirty and the vintage feel of the band is spot-on for those of us who are ourselves vintage enough to remember when New Wave was new. From “36th Street” to “So Sets the Summer,” the compilation is an immaculate collection of music that lovingly recreates a time when punk music hadn’t been fully tamed and pop actually had a soul. "- Chattanooga Pulse
"when you’re as indebted to Guided By Voices and The Apples in Stereo and bands like that – you’re practically born with pop songwriting in your DNA. You wake up, brush your teeth, and knock out about fifty tunes before breakfast. It’s just what you do. It’s what Matt Addison does, and he and his band of merry guitar slingers have perfected their power pop formula in basements and bedrooms and home studios and whatever else like machines on an assembly line. Write hook, record, move on. Remember I.R.S. Records? Flying Nun? Yeah, they’re represented here too, and Mythical Motors would have slid right in to the each label’s roster if they were twenty years older...Selections plays like an album instead of a compilation, and you can’t ask for anything more from your music curators. You have to get your hands on this sweet tape!"- Ryan Masteller, Critical Masses, Cassette Gods
